ECP refuses to install biometric system in NA-246

KARACHI, Pakistan: As only a few days left when by-election will be held in Karachi’s NA-246, the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has refused to install biometric system for the polls in the constituency.

The by-election in NA-246 constituency are scheduled to be held on April 23 while on Tuesday the Sindh Rangers requested the ECP to install a biometric verification system and a video surveillance of every polling station in the constituency to ensure free, fair and transparent election.

However, the ECP declined the request to install biometric system due to technical limitations and a shortage of time. But it agreed to allow the installation of CCTV cameras with the condition that it does not violate the sanctity of vote.

The announcement in this regard was made by the ECP Secretary Baber Yaqoob while addressing a press conference along with the Sindh ECP member in Karachi on Saturday.

Earlier, the ECP secretary discussed arrangements for NA-246 by-polls with the commission officials and senior government officials.

Three main political parties including Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM), the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) and the Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) have fielded their candidates for NA-246 by-polls.
