Infrastructure development in Pakistan under CPEC to take 15 years: Chinese envoy

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan: China has said that construction of roads, railways and pipelines across Pakistan under the proposed China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) project is expected to take around 15 years.

The $46 billion project was signed when the Chinese President Xi Jinping paid a two-day official visit to Pakistan on April 20-21.

Under the project, Pakistan’s southern port city of Gwadar will be connected with China’s northwestern autonomous region of Xinjiang, via a network of highways, railways and pipelines to transport oil and gas.

In an interview with the Chinese News Agency Xinhua, the Chinese ambassador Sun Weidong said that the main objective of the CPEC is to create a 3,000 kilometers economic corridor between the two countries.

The envoy said that besides energy, the mega project involves wide cooperation in fields including agriculture, finance and industrial parks

The Chinese ambassador further said that the project will create new business opportunities for enterprises in many economic sectors.
