Punjab lawmakers demand Altaf Hussain’s trial under article 6

LAHORE, Pakistan: The Punjab lawmakers have demanded of the federal government to try the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) Chief Altaf Hussain and his accomplices under article 6 of the constitution if allegations leveled against them in a recent BBC report are proved.

On Wednesday, the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) in its report alleged that the Karachi-based political party received funding from the Indian government.

In a resolution tabled in the Punjab assembly in Lahore on Friday by the provincial Law Minister Rana Sanaullah and which was later approved unanimously, the lawmakers called on the federal government to form a high-level commission to probe allegations made in the BBC report against the MQM.

Meanwhile, the federal government has written a letter to the UK government to get access to information provided in the BBC report about the MQM

The BBC report had further said that British officials also recovered a list of weapons from the MQM office when they conducted a raid there in June 2013 as part of their investigation into MQM’s alleged money laundering.

Earlier on Thursday in a new conference in Islamabad, the Federal Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan said that facts mentioned in the BBC report were a matter of concern for the people and the government of Pakistan.

The interior minister said that this was an important report that relates the security of Pakistan and needed a fair and transparent inquiry.

It is pertinent to mention here that the MQM has rejected the allegations leveled in the BBC report and terms it as a part of media trial and conspiracy against the party.
