HealthCancer; causes, preventive measures

HYDERABAD, Pakistan: The cancer rate has dramatically risen worldwide and according to World Health Organization (WHO), 11 million new cases with deaths of 8.5 million people are reported every year globally.

The Director, Nuclear Institute of Medicines and Radiotherapy (NIMRA), Dr Naeem Leghari while talking to media in Hyderabad on Thursday, informed that lifestyle changes including reduced physical activity, increase in fast-food consumption, Gutka, Manpauri, Pan and increased tobacco usage were becoming more rampant in the country and those were the factors behind rising incidence of cancer.

He said that despite the existence of those preventive measures, there existed a clear disparity between low and high income countries in rates of cancer as people belonging to the poor or developing countries found lack of access to prevention programmes, treatment and cure.

The nuclear medicines and radiotherapy were indisputably the most dynamic and fast growing disciplines of medicine that play a pivotal role in the diagnosis and management of cancer and allied diseases, he informed.

He said that cancer, caused by viral or bacterial infections, could be prevented through strategies such as vaccination and adopting lifestyle changes, safe behaviors and other control measures, all of which could be implemented worldwide.
