KARACHI: The Supreme Court of Pakistan (SC) was informed on Wednesday that IGP Sindh Fayyaz Leghari and DIG East Aleem Jaffery had been transferred with immediate effect while the court directed Director General Rangers to submit a detailed report on why Rangers failed to control law and order in Karachi, Dispatch News Desk (DND) reported.
A three-member bench headed by Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry comprises Justice Amir Hani Muslim and Justice Ejaz Afzal Khan heard the Abbas Town suo moto notice case at SC Karachi Registry.
According to reports, both the senior police officials – IGP Sindh and DIG East –relinquished the charge of their respective offices.
During today’s proceedings, the court remarked that the paramilitary force and the police were equally responsible for Karachi’s unrest and directed the authorities concerned to suspend all police officials – from SHO to SSP ranks – who are guilty of negligence and submit their suspension notices in the court.
The court also directed representatives of the military intelligence agencies – including ISI, MI and IB – to submit their reports on March 8.
The apex court in its remarks said the provincial government is responsible for the failure to stop Abbas Town bombings.
Justice Chaudhry said that the height of government’s apathy can be gauged by the fact that not a single official was suspended following the incident, adding it seems that the court may be forced to register cases against IGP Sindh and other officials. He asked the respondents why FIR was registered 24 hours after the bombing.
Justice Chaudhry said that had Rangers been active not a single person could have died in violence. “How such officials, who can’t move without armored vehicles, can provide security to commoners,” he remarked.
Meanwhile, the court ordered to suspend SSP Malir Rao Anwar with immediate effect and summoned Director General Rangers to appear before the court.
The next hearing will be held on March 8.
