Afghanistan starts audit of 8 million votes cast in runoff election

KABUL, Afghanistan: The Afghan election commission on Thursday will start an unprecedented audit of all 8.1 million votes cast in the country’s runoff presidential election held on June 14.

The spokesman for the Independent Election Commission (IEC) Noor Muhammad Noor said that the audit will officially take place in the commission’s headquarters in Kabul.

Noor said that national and international observers will be able to observe the process that will take around three weeks.

The IEC spokesman said that their staff would work in two shifts auditing around 1,000 ballot boxes a day, with NATO forces helping to transport the boxes from across the country to Kabul.

Both rival candidates Abdullah Abdullah and Ashraf Ghani have pledged to abide by the results of the total audit.
