ISLAMABAD, Pakistan: The government would computerize all the post offices operating across the country in phases to make it a more efficient service for general public, particularly for those living in far-flung areas, Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs Sheikh Aftab informed the Senate Wednesday.

During the question-hour, the minister said that Pakistan Post has a large network of more than 12,000 Post Offices including 83 General Post Offices, both in the urban and rural areas.

He said computerization of all the Post Offices was a huge undertaking requiring development of hardware and software to be deployed at the grassroots level.

In this connection, he said, an extensive exercise was underway to develop a viable and cost effective solution.

He said, a PC-I in this regard has already been submitted to the Planning Commission through Ministry of Communications, which will help in the automation of all the post offices in phase-wise manner.

The minister said substantive efforts have been made to computerize counter services and shifting them on local areas network (LAN)-based system in the General Post Offices (GPOs) in the country.

Several of the financial services have also been shifted on Centralized architecture by using own budget.

Presently, all of the General Post Offices (GPOs) are providing online computerized services especially military pension payment, Provincial Taxes, Child Support Programme and Benazir Income Support Programme (BISP).

Track and Trace System are working on LAN Based System whereas, online system is also available for checking the delivery status of foreign articles as well as Express Post articles, he added.
