Another polio case surfaces in Balochistan

QUETTA, Pakistan: Another polio case has surfaced in Balochistan on Saturday, taking the number of children detected with the crippling disease in the troubled province this year to three.

The new case emerged in the Dukki area of Balochistan’s Loralai district where the polio virus was found in a 12-year-old boy named Niamatullah.

The sources in health department said that the parents did not allow officials to administer polio vaccine to their children during the polio campaign carried out in the district.

It was the third polio case reported in the province during the current year as two polio cases had already been confirmed in Chaman and Chaghi area of Balochistan.

Last year, as many as 23 cases of poliovirus were detected in Balochistan.

On January 2 this year, the Balochistan health minister Rahmat Saleh Baloch had said that negligence in the polio campaigns to be carried out in the province would not be tolerated at all cost.

The minister had directed the concerned health authorities to ensure coordination with the district health officers (DHOs) for the success of polio campaigns in the province.
