ISLAMABAD, Pakistan: A day after the Supreme Court expressed resentment over his controversial remarks against the Judges and sought his apology, the Attorney General for Pakistan Anwar Mansoor Khan has tendered his resignation from the position.

Anwar Mansoor Khan sent his resignation to President Dr Arif Alvi on Thursday.

I note with profound regret that the Pakistan Bar Council, of which I am the Chairman, has demanded through its Press Release dated 19th of February 2020 that I resign forthwith from the Office of the Attorney General of Pakistan.

Being a life member of Karachi Bar Association, Sindh Bar Association and the Supreme Court Bar Association, and having previously served as the Advocate General Sindh, the Attorney General for Pakistan and a judge of the High Court of Sindh, I stand with my brothers and colleagues at the Bar and I wish to reaffirm my faith in the highest principles of integrity and professional excellence that the Pakistan Bar Council has always stood for.

Accordantly, I hereby resign from the position of the Attorney General for Pakistan and request you to accept it with immediate effect. In the last year and a half, I worked to the best of my ability to serve this solemn office with honesty of purpose, and commitment to upholding the Constitution.

I wish my successor the very best of success and pray that God may continue to shower His countless blessings on our motherland and nation,” his resignation stated.

The attorney general had reportedly made certain remarks concerning members of a bench hearing the Presidential Reference against Justice Qazi Faez Isa. His remarks infuriated the Apex Court Judges who asked him to produce evidence supporting his statement or submit a written apology.

“As [a] certain statement was made by the AG about the bench yesterday, it would be appreciated if the material on the basis of which the statement was made is placed on record before the bench,” Justice Umar Ata Bandial said while dictating the order at the end of Wednesday’s hearing.

Sources said that Anwar Mansoor Khan didn’t himself resigned; rather, he was asked to do so.

They said that Prime Minister Imran Khan also voiced his anger over the attorney general’s irresponsible statement in the Supreme Court, and maintained that he should no more remain on the post.
