Arvind Kejriwal led AAP secures landslide victory in Delhi state polls

NEW DELHI, India: The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) led by anti-corruption campaigner Arvind Kejriwal secured a landslide victory in the recent state assembly election for New Delhi, according to election results .

The AAP got unprecedented victory by securing 67 seats in the 70-seat state assembly, the Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) got only three seats while the Congress party was routed out.

The Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who is also the leader of the ruling BJP, congratulated Arvind Kejriwal on his party’s win in Delhi assembly election and assured him of the Centre’s support in the development of Delhi.

“Arvind Kejriwal will take oath as the Delhi Chief Minister on February 14 at Ramlila Maidan,” the AAP leader Ashutosh said.

The 70-seat legislative assembly election was held on Saturday to elect 70 members of the sixth legislative assembly of Delhi.

More than 13 million people were eligible to go to the polls at nearly 12,000 polling stations to elect their representatives.

The BJP won 274 seats in the 543-seat lower house of parliament called the Lok Sabha in May 2014. However, the ruling party lacks a majority in the upper house, Rajya Sabha.

The party needs to win most of the state elections over the next four years in order to gain control of both houses of parliament.
