ISLAMABAD: Ashraf Mahmood Wathra was appointed as the acting State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) Governor on Friday, a day after the federal minister for finance Ishaq Dar accepted the resignation of SBP Governor Yaseen Anwar with effect from January 31, 2014.

The media reported citing the sources said that Yaseen Anwar had been under pressure from the ministry of finance, which appeared to be hell-bent on heavy borrowing from the state bank as well as commercial banks. However, the official reason given for his resignation was that his son had recently suffered an accident.

Yaseen Anwar had been appointed as State Bank governor in July 2011 after former governor Shahid Kardar stepped down from the position amidst rumours that he had developed differences with the ministry of finance.

Kardar’s predecessor, Saleem Raza, had also resigned after only 16 months in office.
