LAHORE: Unidentified men shot dead Ahle Sunnat Wal Jamaat (ASWJ) Punjab leader Maulana Shamsur Rehman Muavia at Ravi Road near Bhatti Chowk in Lahore on Friday, triggering a strong condemnation by the group which announced a country-wide protest against the attack.
The sources in the ASWJ said that the ASWJ leader was going home after Friday prayers from Muhammadi Masjid, when unknown men opened fire at his car near Bhatti Chowk. The leader was rushed to Mayo hospital, but he succumbed to his injuries before he could be treated, the sources added.
A large contingent of police personnel reached the site of the murder. Police took custody of the leader’s body and sent for post mortem.
His funeral prayer will be offered before Lahore Press Club tomorrow.
The ASWJ strongly condemned the killing of Maulana Shamsur Rehman Muavia and announced a country-wide protest against the attack. Moreover, the ASWJ also announced to observe three days of mourning against its leader killing.
Meanwhile, the ASWJ activists reportedly held protest in Islamabad against killing of Maulana Shamsur Rehman Muavia which led to the closure of Aabpara market and Kashmir road.
