Baikonur, Kazakhstan: Baikonur cosmodrome and the city of Baikonur celebrated the 63rd anniversary of the foundation.

According to Kazinform reports, Baikonur was established on June 2, 1955 under the directives of the then General Staff of the USSR Ministry of Defense as scientific and research test site No. 5 (Baikonur Cosmodrome). Later this day was defined as the day of the formation of the city and Baikonur cosmodrome.

Baikonur celebrates a lot of sports that take place on the newly renovated recreation area. The main solemn event was held on Saturday in the city square, where a contest for the best family of the city of Baikonur and a big concert with a grandiose salute was celebrated. Traditionally, on the eve of the City Day, the title of “Honorary Citizen of the City of Baikonur” was established. This year the list of honored people of the Baikonur space complex was replenished by the veteran of the USSR Armed Forces, the Honored Tester of the Cosmodrome, the Honorary Builder of Baikonur Yuri Lukyanov and the veteran of Baikonur and the company of Baikonurenergo Nina Vladimirtseva.

It may be mentioned that Bailkonur Cosmodrome is the world’s first and largest operational space launch facility of the world and is situated in the desert steppe of Baikonur— 200 kilometres east of the Aral Sea and north of the river Syr Darya. A railway track links the establishment through Tyuratam railway station to rest of Kazakhstan.

The spaceport is currently leased by the Kazakh Government to Russia until 2050, and is managed jointly by the Roscosmos State Corporation and the Russian Aerospace Forces.
