Dhaka, Bangladesh: State Minister for Postal Service and Telecom Tarana Halim will hold Facebook authorities in Singapore on March 30 to finalise the issue to open a separate desk for Bangladesh to protect its cultural values in the social media.

“A meeting with the Facebook authorities will be held in Singapore on March 30. We will demand for a separate desk for Bangladesh so that it (Bangladesh Desk) can oversee the impact on different issues in Bangladesh”, said Tarana.

Talking to journalists at her office here on Thursday, State Minister Tarana said that social media has become lethal tool of terrorists to ignite militancy in Bangladesh. She also said that faceless social media is also playing havoc with cultural norms of Bangladesh and this practice could (can) not be left unattended. She added that her government was firm to deal with Facebook authorities to snub and track those who are (were) fanning divide in society, spreading militancy and radicalizing multi ethnic society of Bangladesh.

Facebook has become a nuisance for many South Asian countries for allegedly spreading anti-religion sentiments, hate speech, militancy and anti-social viewpoint without any check and balance.

Pakistan is already considering ban on Facebook due to its refusal to down blasphemous material. According to sources Facebook regretted meeting Pakistani authorities for sharing data about pages which are allegedly involved in spreading blasphemous material.
