WorldBlast rips though Shia mosque in eastern Saudi Arabia, 30 killed

RIYADH, Saudi Arabia: A suicide blast ripped through a Shia mosque in the eastern region of sunni-majority Saudi Arabia on Friday, killing at least 30 persons and injured several others.

The explosion took place at the Imam Ali mosque located in the town of al-Qadeeh in eastern Qatif province where more than 150 persons had gathered for Friday prayers.

In a statement, a spokesman of the Saudi Interior Ministry said that an investigation into the blast has been launched while more details about the incident will be made public after the government get to know about it.

The blast occurs at a time when the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia accompanied with some regional allies is engaged in military operation against Houthi rebels in Yemen.

On March 28, a senior member of the Houthis Executive Committee Abdel Mon’em Qurashi said that they would destroy the Saudi regime for its “aggressive” policies.

However, it would be premature to blame Houthis for the suicide blast because the group also comprises Shia Muslims like those killed in the suicide attack.

Meanwhile, Pakistan’s President Mamnoon Hussain strongly condemned the bomb blast in a mosque in Saudi Arabia.

In a message to the Saudi King Salman bin Abdul Aziz, he conveyed condolences to bereaved families and said Pakistan stands firmly with Saudi Arabia in this hour of trial.
