NEW YORK: The UN-Arab League Special Representative for Syria Lakhdar Brahimi is to step down on May 31 over an international deadlock to end the three year civil war in the country that has claimed more than 150,000 lives.
The UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon announced during a daily press briefing at the UN headquarters in New York, describing it as a tragedy for the Syrian people and a failure for the United Nations.
Brahimi was appointed the UN-Arab League special envoy for Syria on August 17, 2012.
