NEW DELHI: A British female tourist reached hospital after she jumped out of a first-floor window of a hotel in order to escape rape in India.
The 25-year-old tourist, reportedly staying in a hotel in the city of Agra, home to the Taj Mahal, fled through the window when someone broke into her room and attempted to rape her. The woman received head injuries and fractures to both legs after the jump.
The alleged rapist, who is believed to be the owner of the hotel where the woman was staying, has been detained by the police.
On Saturday, a 39-year-old Swiss female tourist, who was on a cycling trip from the temple town of Orchha to Seonda with her husband in the central Indian state of Madhya Pradesh, fell prey to eight men who attacked the couple, sexually assaulted the woman and robbed the pair.
The rising number of rape cases in India has been a cause of concern. A total of 24 206 cases of rape were reported in 2011, according to government data. The figures for 2012 have not yet been collated.
