PakistanParliamentary committee meeting gets breakthrough: Khurshid Shah

ISLAMABAD: A breakthrough had taken place in today’s meeting of an eight-member parliamentary committee formed to nominate a consensus candidate for the position of caretaker prime minister, a member of the committee from PPP Syed Khurshid Shah revealed on Friday.

Pakistan Peoples’ Party (PPP) leader said that the committee meeting has been adjourned to 9 in the evening, during which a consensus is likely to be reached.

However, Farooq H Naek, another member of the committee from PPP, said the panel members were adamant on their respective positions.

Today is the last day for the committee to nominate a consensus candidate, if it fails the matter will automatically go to the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP), which will have to finalise one name within two days.

The parliamentary committee having equal representation from the treasury and opposition benches on Thursday met for the second day but could not evolve consensus over a nominee out of four names for the coveted post.

In its sessions over the last two days, the committee scrutinised the names of PML-N nominees Rasul Bakhsh Palij, Justice (retd) Nasir Aslam Zahid and PPP nominees Justice (retd) Mir Hazar Khan Khoso and Dr Ishrat Hussain.

The members of the bipartisan committee include Sardar Mahtab Abbasi, Sardar Yaqoob Nasir, Pervez Rasheed, Saad Rafiq, Chaudhry Shujaat, Farooq Naek, Khurshid Shah and Ghulam Bilour.
