PESHAWAR, Pakistan: Member of Provincial Assembly (MPA) from PK-90 Chitral Syed Sardar Hussain Shah Tuesday said 70 percent of the population of Chitral district had been affected by the Monday’s earthquake with thousands of houses damaged.
Addressing a press conference here at Peshawar Press Club, he said about 45 people died in the district and the death toll might rise as 80 per cent of the area was still out of contact.
He said the communication system had also been damaged and most of the roads were blocked due to avalanches. Extreme cold weather was hampering relief and rehabilitation activities.
The MPA, who belongs to the Pakistan People’s Party, said most of infrastructure in the district had already been damaged due to flash floods while the massive earthquake had aggravated the situation.
He urged the federal and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa governments, Pakistan Army and donor agencies to help the Chitralis and provide health facilities, besides restoring the damaged communication networks.
