NationalCII declares Punjab Women Protection Act contradictory to Shariah

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan: Council of Islamic Ideology (CII) Tuesday declared the Punjab Protection of Women Against Violence Act 2015 as contradictory to the Constitution, laws and Islamic teachings.

Considering a letter written by Punjab Law Minister Rana Sanaullah seeking the Council’s opinion on Punjab Protection of Women Against Violence Act 2015, the 202th meeting of the CII altogether rejected the Act after clause-wise review.

The Council observed that the Punjab government had not sent the Act as per prescribed constitutional method as did by the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government by sending their Women Protection Bill to the CII for review.

The CII declared several clauses of the Protection of Women Against Violence Act (Punjab) as non-conforming to the Constitution, as well as against Shariah.

The Council directed the Punjab Assembly to table another bill, which ensures protection of the rights of entire family, impedes all kinds of violence against any member and also protects the rights of the entire family members and proposing Islamic punishments.

The draft bill should be sent to the CII for review.

The Council also forwarded suggestions for ensuring protection of women’s rights.

The Council asked the respective authorities to introduce new chapters in the curricula right from primary to higher levels to underline the respect of family, relatives, women and neighbours.
