RAWALPINDI, Pakistan: A group of mountaineers part of the International Winter K-2 Expedition visited Pakistan’s army headquarters (GHQ) in Rawalpindi on Friday, and met the Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Qamar Javed Bajwa.

Talking to the climbers, the COAS congratulated them for their great achievement, scaling K-2 (8,611 metres) in winter for the first time; making history in the field of mountaineering.

The delegation shared their experiences during the momentous expedition and thanked Pakistan and its people for their warm hospitality.

The delegation also expressed their gratitude for facilitating the expedition to achieve this record.

Winter K-2 Expedition 2020-21/Seven Summit Trek

On December 19, 2020, an International Winter K-2 Expedition reached Pakistan. After Completing formalities in Islamabad, the expedition reached K-2 Base Camp on December 29, 2020.

K-2 Summit: January 16, 2021

On January 16, 2021 at about 1656 hrs, 10 Nepali climbers reached the Summit of K-2 (8,611 metres) in winter & smashed a record.

Previously, the highest altitude achieved on K-2 in the winter season was 7,750 metres by Denis Urubko and Marcin Kaczkan in 2002-03

Separately, the Nepalese mountaineering team also met the Prime Minister’s Special Assistant on Overseas Pakistanis and Human Resource Development Syed Zulfikar Abbas Bukhari in Islamabad today (Friday).
