LAHORE: Chief Minister Punjab Shahbaz Sharif has sent an advice for the dissolution of the Punjab Assembly to the provincial Governor Makhdoom Ahmad Mahmood on Wednesday, paving the way for holding general elections for national and provincial assemblies on the same day, Dispatch News Desk (DND) reported.
The sources said Punjab Assembly is likely to be dissolved today at anytime. Following the dissolution of Punjab Assembly tonight (Wednesday), general elections for national and provincial assemblies will be held on May 11, the sources said.
Earlier‚ President Asif Ali Zardari had announced that general elections for National Assembly shall be held on May 11.
Presidential Spokespman Senator Farhatullah Babar said that the President announced the date as soon as the summary regarding holding of general elections for National Assembly was received from the Prime Minister Raja Pervez Ashraf on Wednesday.
On the other hand, a consensus has yet to be reached between the opposition leader and chief minister of the Punjab Assembly over the caretaker setup in the province.
The matter of nominating a caretaker setup in the province would be forwarded to a parliamentary committee in case the issue was not resolved between the parties.
