WASHINGTON: The Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Raheel Sharif visited the US Central Command (CENTCOM) headquarters in Florida for talks with the US military leadership.
The army chief is currently on a seven-day visit to the United States to explore the possibilities of further enhancing mutually beneficial relationship.
During his meeting with the CENTCOM Commander Gen Lloyd J. Austin III, the COAS discussed the military operation Zarb-e-Azb being carried out since June 15 against the militants in Pakistan’s volatile northwestern tribal region and the success achieved so far.
The CENTCOM commander lauded the efforts made by the Pakistan army and acknowledged the success achieved during the operation.
The situation in Afghanistan and the need to bring peace and stability in that country also came under discussion during the meeting between the two military leaders.
The Pakistan’s army chief arrived in the US on Sunday on a seven-day visit to hold talks with the Chairman Joint Chiefs Staff General Martin Dempsey, the CENTCOM leaders and the State Department officials, aiming to discuss measures to promote relations in defence field besides cooperation to ensure stability in Afghanistan.
The US official said that General Raheel’s meeting with his US counterparts will provide an opportunity to enhance military-to-military cooperation between the two countries.
Meanwhile in an interview, the US Special Representative for Afghanistan and Pakistan Dan Feldman has commended operation Zarb-e-Azb and acknowledged Pakistan’s sacrifices in the fight against terrorism
Feldman said that the United States has strong civilian and military relationship with Pakistan.
