COAS, Nawaz discuss progress in Karachi operation

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan: The Chief of the Army Staff (COAS) General Raheel Sharif called on Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif in Islamabad on Thursday, and discussed overall security situation of the country and Zarb-e-Azb operation.

During the meeting, the two leaders also held a discussion on the progress in Karachi operation against criminals and terrorists by Rangers.

The Federal Finance Minister Ishaq Dar was also present on the occasion.

The meeting took place hours after the death row prisoner and the former Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) activist Saulat Mirza alleged that he killed former Karachi Electric Supply Corporation (KESC) Director Shahid Hamid on the directives of the MQM Chief Altaf Hussain.

The relations between the army and the MQM became tense following a raid by a heavy contingent of Rangers at the MQM’s Karachi headquarters Nine Zero on March 11.

On Tuesday, a First Information Report (FIR) was registered against the MQM Chief Altaf Hussain at the Civil Lines Police Station in Karachi on the complaint of Rangers spokesperson Col Tahir Mehmood for passing threats to the paramilitary force following the raid.

However, while addressing his workers on the occasion of MQM’s 31st Foundation Day at the Jinnah Ground on Wednesday evening, the MQM Chief said that he does not want to fight with the armed forces.

“I don’t want to fight with the army or engage in confrontation with them…don’t consider me your enemy or a traitor,” Altaf Hussain in his address made these remarks apparently for the army.
