HeadlinesEC expresses failure to render voting rights to overseas Pakistanis

ISLAMABAD: The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) on Monday submitted a report in the Supreme Court of Pakistan (SCP), expressing its inability to render voting rights to overseas Pakistanis in the coming general elections.

The ECP, in a report today, opposed a hurriedly-developed mechanism to enable the overseas Pakistanis to exercise their right to vote.

It said that without a proper mechanism in place, allowing Pakistanis to vote in the election would compromise the transparency. The election commission’s report said legislation was required on the matter, along with the setting-up of a proper mechanism.

It added that a hasty decision over the matter may compromise the transparency of the polls and may in fact prove to be “disastrous”.

Last month, the Supreme Court had directed the government to ensure that overseas Pakistanis are able to cast their votes in the elections.

The court said that voting facilities should be made available with the help of Pakistan Overseas Foundation and NADRA. Top NADRA officials also claimed they had developed a software to render voting facility to overseas Pakistanis.
