CAIRO: Egyptian President Mohamed Morsi has said that he will not step down and has accused remnants of the previous regime of being behind the deadly unrest rocking the country.
In a televised speech, Morsi described himself as the “guardian of legitimacy,” saying, he would “continue shouldering the responsibility,” despite calls by his opponents for him to step down.
“The remnants of the former regime and their lack of desire to move forward and attempts to keep Egypt at a standstill — this is all unacceptable,” Morsi said.
Morsi said that he gained power in a democratic election and has no problem with peaceful demonstrations, but stressed that there is no room for violence, killing, and fabrications.
Meanwhile‚ at least 16 people were killed and over 200 were injured in clashes between the country’s security forces and Morsi’s supporters near Cairo University.
