KARACHI: A former member of Sindh Assembly belonging to Muttahida Quami Movement (MQM) was arrested last night from his residence in the city area of North Nazimabad, triggering a strong protest against his arrest across the province.
Nadeem Hashmi has been arrested, the party has confirmed, saying police conducted a raid at his residence and took him in custody. A case against Hashmi has been lodged at the Pirabad Police Station.
Later on, a six-member delegation led by Khwaja Izharul Hasan arrived at the Police Station. Khwaja said a murder case has been registered against Hashmi.
Meanwhile, the MQM activists also reached Pirabad Police Station overnight and demanded the release of MQM’s former MPA.
On the other hand, citizens in the cities and towns across Sindh reacting spontaneously against the last night arrest of the MQM former MPA came out on the streets strongly protesting the police highhandedness torched tyres, blocked the roads.
According to details, the shops opening early morning, schools, CNG and petrol pumps were soon closed and transports disappeared from the roads giving the city a look of an undeclared strike. Some unknown persons also torched a passenger coach near the jump at Nasir Colony, Korangi.
Reports reaching from Hyderabad, Mirpurkhas and a few other towns across Sindh said that the shops, CNG stations and road traffics in the towns were forced to close down, while the youths and children voicing slogans, burning tyres on the roads in protest against the arrest of MQM MPA.
