Government of PakistanFederal Cabinet okays trial of Sharif family members in Open Court

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan: The Federal Cabinet on Wednesday decided to withdraw the notification of trial of detained Sharif family members in Al-Azizia and Flagship references at Adiala Jail in Rawalpindi.

The decision was taken in the meeting held in Islamabad with the Caretaker Prime Minister Justice (retd) Nasir-ul-Mulk, and which discussed nine-point agenda.

Sources said that the meeting also approved to cancel the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) notification.

Following the withdrawal of the previous notification, the trial of Nawaz Sharif, Maryam Nawaz and Captain (retd) Muhammad Safdar would be held in the Open Court.

During the meeting, the Caretaker Interior Minister Azam Khan also gave a briefing to the Cabinet members on the law and order situation.

Last Friday, the Ministry of Law and Justice issued a notification which stated “In exercise of the powers conferred by sub-section (b) of section 16 of the National Accountability Ordinance, 1999 (XVIII of 1999), the federal government is please to specify the Central Jail Adiala, Rawalpindi, to be the place where the Accountability Court-I, Islamabad shall sit for trial of References No. 18/2017 and 19/2017 against Mian Muhammad Nawaz Sharif and others.”

The notification was issued hours after the former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and his daughter Maryam Nawaz were taken into custody by the security forces at Lahore’s Allama Iqbal International Airport upon their return from London.

Later both the leaders of Pakistan Muslim league-Nawaz (PML-N) were detained in Rawalpindi’s Adiala Jai as they had been awarded 10 years and seven years imprisonment respectively by the Accountability Court in Avenfield reference on July 6.
