In its plea, the government was of the view that the Rs341 billion Kissan package has no link with the local government elections in Punjab and Sindh.

The ECP on September 30 ordered the federal government to stop implementation on the Kissan package till December 3, terming it as an attempt to influence the local bodies elections in Punjab and Sindh.

However while presiding over a meeting on issues faced by the agricultural sector and facilitation to farmers in Islamabad on Tuesday, Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif directed the attorney general to file a petition in the Supreme Court against the suspension of the Kissan package.

The prime minister noted that the farmer community throughout the country is suffering due to non-implementation of Kissan package. He said that the Kissan package is for the farmers of entire country and is not specific to any region.

Sharif said that the present government is working to protect farmers’ rights without any political or regional bias.
