ISLAMABAD, Pakistan: The federal government is working on projects to build more hospitals and improve health facilities for citizens of urban and rural areas of Islamabad.

According to official sources, the government has planned a 1200-bed hospital in Islamabad to cater to long standing demand of the people for quality health-care facility in the capital.

Prime Minister Muhammad Nawaz Sharif has approved the 1200 bed hospital project.

Twenty acres of land at Kuri road will be allocated for the said purpose. Necessary directions have been issued to the Ministry of Health to initiate the process of acquiring the land.

The Agha Khan Foundation will provide free of cost technical assistance in the project, which would have 600 beds for specialized care units.

Another project is a state of the art cancer hospital for the federal capital during the current fiscal year.

Steps are also being taken to expand capacity of Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) and Polyclinic hospital.

The new projects are necessary to reduce workload on main hospitals; Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) and Federal Government Polyclinic.

PIMS has been catering to about 10,000 patients on average from Islamabad, Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, FATA, Gilgit-Baltistan, Azad Jammu and Kashmir and upper Punjab.

Polyclinic will be expanded within months as the CDA has given possession of about 20 kanal to the hospital where previously Argentina Park was located.

However, one real step that needs to be taken is to improve the condition of Basic Health Units (BHUs) and Rural Health Centers (RHCs) of Islamabad territory.

It is being planned to send doctors of PIMS and Polyclinic on rotation to BHUs and RHCs to ensure better medical treatment.

The federal capital currently has a concentration of hospitals only in the old G Sectors, while over the years the city has seen considerable expansion on its western and southern fringes, with the construction of hundreds and thousands of new homes in dozens of new housing societies.

In view of shortage of hospitals, the new projects will help in providing necessary health facilities to the citizens.
