ISLAMABAD, Pakistan: The Federal government has decided to withdraw the nomination of Atif Mian from Economic Advisory Council (EAC), the Minister for Information and Broadcasting Fawad Chaudhry said.

In a tweet on Friday, Fawad Chaudhry said that “The Government has decided to withdraw the nomination of Atif Mian from Economic Advisory Council. The government wants to move forward while taking Ulema and all segments of society on board and if one nomination creates a different impression then it is not appropriate.”

Fawad Chaudhry said that “Imran Khan’s ideal is the State of Madinah. PM and the Cabinet members are Ashiqan-e- Rasool (SAW). Finality of the Prophethood is an integral part of our faith and the latest achievement gained by the government on the issue of blasphemous cartoons is an expression of this relationship”.

Meanwhile, the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf’s (PTI) Senator Faisal Javed also said in a twitter message that “Atif Mian was asked to step down from the Advisory Council and he has agreed. A replacement would be announced later.”

Atif Mian, a 43-year-old Pakistani-American Professor of Economics, Public Policy and Finance at Princeton University in the United States, was appointed as a member of an 18-member Economic Advisory Council (EAC); however soon after a storm erupted in social media and pressure was exerted by religiopolitical parties against Atif Mian’s appointment as he belongs to Ahmadiyya Community.

Though the Information Minister Fawad Chaudhry defended Atif Mian’s appointment, saying that minorities have equal rights in Pakistan as enjoyed by majorities and a highly qualified and competent non-Muslim must also be allowed to excel in life. But following a continued backlash in social media, the federal government had to surrender and withdraw its earlier decision of appointing Atif Mian in EAC.
