EuropeFormer Italian PM Silvio Berlusconi gets one year imprisonment in wiretap trial

MILAN: Former Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi has been sentenced to one year imprisonment over an illegal wiretap.

Berlusconi was accused of making public the taped contents of a confidential phone call. They were published in a newspaper run by his brother.

He has denied any wrongdoing and is likely to appeal and will remain free in the meantime.

The sentence, which was read in court by the judge, came as the ex premier is facing two other trials for alleged tax fraud and paying for sex with an underage prostitute.
