Government, Taliban peace talks today: Maulana Aziz

ISLAMABAD: Maulana Abdul Aziz, a part of three-member Taliban-nominated peace committee and Lal Masjid chief cleric, said on Thursday that peace talks with the government negotiating team is scheduled for today, however he declined to disclose about timing and place of the talks.

The cleric said that the Tehrik-i-Taliban (TTP) wanted to have meeting with their nominated committee, adding that they were deliberating to visit Waziristan or call Taliban near Peshawar for meeting.

Maulana Aziz further said that the committee could ask the TTP to provide their demands in written, however, the final decision in this regard would be made after meeting with government committee.

The prime minister’s advisor on national affairs and the coordinator of the government-nominated four-member committee Irfan Siddiqui also said that the meeting with the committee nominated by the Taliban for peace talks is expected to take place on Thursday.

The preliminary peace talks between the two sides which were scheduled to be held on Tuesday were delayed after the government committee refused to hold talks with the Taliban committee, seeking clarifications on certain matters from the TTP’s negotiating team.
