Improper and excessive use of artificial intelligence

OpinionImproper and excessive use of artificial intelligence

By Ameer Uqba Goraya

The Artificial Intelligence (AI) has enormous potential to improve society but it is essential to recognize that it also creates certain challenges if implemented without proper care and ethical standards.

One of these challenges is the danger of techno-solutionism, a view that mistakenly treats AI as a universal solution rather than a tool. As AI capabilities advance, the temptation to rely on AI-driven decision-making for all societal problems becomes more attractive. However, history shows more than once that technology, while solving some issues, can unintentionally create bigger ones.

Another danger is the exploitation of AI by cybercriminals for malicious purposes. AI can enable a range of digital, physical, and political threats such as deepfakes, data tampering, learning-based cyber-attacks, autonomous armed drones, disinformation campaigns, and manipulation of financial markets. These threats jeopardize the security, privacy, and trust of individuals and institutions alike.

Another peril is the continuation of bias and discrimination through AI algorithms. If not adequately monitored, these algorithms can unintentionally strengthen societal biases, widening inequalities in areas such as criminal justice and hiring practices. Moreover, the displacement of jobs due to automation highlights the need for a comprehensive strategy to retrain and adjust the workforce for an AI-driven world.

Therefore, the public must remain alert about the possible misuse and overuse of AI, and to demand increased transparency, accountability, and regulatory measures from both developers and users of these technologies.

It is our responsibility to use AI for noble purpose rather than allowing its abuse for wicked ends.
