ISLAMABAD, Pakistan: The former Minister for Interior, Planning and Development Ahsan Iqbal on Friday said despite having friendly umpire in Punjab, the Chairman Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Imran Khan was destined to face defeat in 2018 general elections as the public not umpire would cast the vote.

His remarks came in reference to the prominent analyst and educationist Professor Hassan Askari who took oath of his Office as the Caretaker Chief Minister Punjab today in Lahore.

The Governor Punjab Malik Muhammad Rafique Rajwana administered the oath to Hassan Askari in a Ceremony attended by a large number of dignitaries.

The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) had appointed Professor Hassan Askari as the Caretaker Chief Minister Punjab after the Parliamentary Committee consisting of both the government and the opposition lawmakers in Punjab didn’t agree on any name for the Post, and eventually the issue was referred to the ECP.

The Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leaders had rejected the ECP’s decision of Hassan Askari’s appointment as the Caretaker Chief Minister Punjab saying the latter was an ardent critic of the PML-N, and also asked the Election Commission to review its decision.

However, the ECP brushed aside the PML-N’s concerns in that regard and upheld its decision.
