Indian elections 2014: Polling underway for seventh phase of Lok Sabha elections

NEW DELHI: The polling for the seventh phase of the nine-phase Lok Sabha elections is underway in India on Wednesday as almost 139 million eligible voters in 89 constituencies across seven states and two union territories are casting votes to elect their representatives.

The Indian elections which began on April 7 will continue till May 12 during which some 814 million eligible voters will elect members of the 543-seat Lok Sabha in the world’s biggest elections.

The result of this election will be declared on May 16 before the 15th Lok Sabha completes its constitutional mandate on May 31, 2014.

The main contest in the elections is between the Congress Party, led by Rahul Gandhi, and main opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), led by the nationalist leader, Narendra Modi.

The polling for the first six phases of Lok Sabha elections has already been held while seventh phase of polling in the Lok Sabha elections continues.
