ISLAMABAD, Pakistan: The ruling Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) senior leader Iqbal Zafar Jhagra will be new governor of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa as per advice sent to President Mamnoon Hussain by Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif on Wednesday.
In a statement issued in Islamabad, the PM House said that the summary for the appointment of Iqbal Zafar Jhagra as the new governor of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa has been sent to the president.
The appointment was made after Sardar Mehtab Ahmed Khan resigned as the governor Khyber Pakhtunkhwa on February 8, citing health issues as the reason for quitting the office.
Earlier, it was reported that the federal government had appointed the current Defense Secretary Lieutenant General Alam Khattak as the new provincial governor after the resignation of Sardar Mehtab Ahmed Khan. However, the government denied such reports.
The 68-year-old Iqbal Zafar Jhagra hails from a village ‘Jhagra’ near Peshawar, the Capital of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. He is the current Secretary General of PML-N and also remained the Senator in the past.
