IranIran calls on Pakistan to take action on border attack

TEHRAN: Iran on Tuesday condemned the recent terrorist attack that killed the 14 Iranian border guards and injured five others near the border with Pakistan, and called on Islamabad to identify, apprehend and extradite the perpetrators of the attack.

Unknown gunmen killed 14 Iranian border guards and injured five others in clashes in a mountainous region outside Saravan, a town in southeast Iran on the border with Pakistan on Friday night.

In her weekly press conference on Tuesday, Iran’s Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Marziyeh Afkham said that Iran is pursuing the implementation of a security agreement between Tehran and Islamabad.

Iran and Pakistan signed a security agreement in February under which both countries are required to cooperate in preventing and combating organized crime, fighting terrorism and countering the activities that pose a threat to the national security of either country.

Earlier on Tuesday, Pakistan’s chargé d’affaires in Tehran Sohail Siddiqui told Iranian state news agency that Pakistani officials are pursuing the matter and that if the perpetrators of the attack are found to be on Pakistani soil, they will be extradited to Iran according to the extradition treaty between the two countries.
