BAGHDAD: The Iraqi people are casting their votes on Wednesday in the country’s first parliamentary elections since the 2011 withdrawal of US forces.
It is hoped that Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki will win a third term in the elections during which over 20 million voters will choose between upwards of 9,000 candidates running for 328 seats.
Meanwhile, al-Qaeda-linked militants have threatened to disrupt the elections by bombings.
The Iraqi soldiers and policemen began voting on April 28, two days before the national elections, in order to be able to provide security on the main polling day.
