ISLAMABAD, Pakistan: The senior most Judge of the Supreme Court Justice Jawad S Khawaja has been appointed as the Chief Justice of Pakistan.

His appointment was made on Wednesday by President Mamnoon Hussain on the advice of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif.

Justice Jawad Khawaja would take the charge of new office on August 17 after retirement of the Chief Justice Nasirul Mulk on August 16.

“On a summary initiated by the Law, Justice and Human Rights Division, President Mamnoon Hussain approved the prime minister’s advice for appointment of senior judge of the Supreme Court, Justice Jawad S Khawaja, as Chief Justice of Pakistan with effect from August 17, 2015, after superannuation of Justice Nasirul Mulk, Chief Justice of Pakistan, on attaining the age of 65 years w.e.f. August 16, 2015,” according to a press release issued by the Presidency.

Justice Jawad Khawaja was born in Wazirabad in 1950, and did his LLB at the Punjab University Law College and his LLM from the University of California, Berkeley.

He started his legal practice as an advocate of the Lahore High Court (LHC) in 1975. In 1999, he became a judge of the LHC but resigned in 2007 in response to the maltreatment of Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry on March 9, 2007.

Justice Jawad Khawaja joined the Law and Policy Department of the Lahore University of Management Sciences (LUMS) in August 2007 and served as the head of department from October 2007 to May 2009, when he joined the Supreme Court of Pakistan.
