Islamabad, Pakistan: Senior journalist and former chairman of Pakistan Electronic Media Authority (Pemra), Absar Alam is in stable condition after he was allegedly shot at by an unidentified person in F/11 Park Islamabad.

The Police has registered the First Information Report (FIR) under section 334 of the Pakistan Penal Code (PPC). FIR under section 334 PPC indicates that Islamabad Police believes that the attacker did not want to kill Absar Alam because 334 PPC indicates an act/crime for voluntarily causes hurt by means of any instrument for shooting, stabbing or cutting, or any instrument which, used as a weapon of offence, is likely to cause death.

 


While the attempt of murder is dealt with under section 506 PPC which states that whoever commits the offence of criminal intimidation shall be punished with imprisonment of either description for a term which may extend to two years, or with fine, or with both;

and if the threat be to cause death or grievous hurt, or to cause the destruction of any property by fire, or to cause an offence punishable with death or 166[ imprisonment for life], or with imprisonment for a term which may extend to seven years,

“At least 10 journalists were murdered and several others threatened, kidnapped, tortured and arrested in Pakistan on trumped-up charges while discharging their professional responsibilities in 2020 alone, according to the Council of Pakistan Newspaper Editors’ (CPNE) Media Freedom Report 2020,” reports DAWN Newspaper.
