ISLAMABAD, Pakistan: Justice Anwar Zaheer Jamali has become the 24th Chief Justice of Pakistan, replacing Justice Jawwad S Khawaja who served as the Chief Justice for just 24 days.

President Mamnoon Hussain administered the oath to the new Chief Justice at a ceremony at Aiwan e Sadr Islamabad on Thursday.

The oath-taking ceremony was attended by Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, Chairman Joint Chief of Staff Committee, three services Chiefs and diplomats of different countries besides judges of the apex court, provincial governors and federal ministers among others.

Earlier on Wednesday, Justice Jawwad S Khawaja retired as the Chief Justice of Pakistan after serving at the exalted position for just 24 days.

Justice Anwar Zaheer Jamali became judge of the Sindh High Court (SHC) in May 1998. He was elevated to the post of Chief Justice of the SHC in 2008. He became judge of the Supreme Court in August 2009.

Justice Jamali was one of the judges who refused to take fresh oath under the Provisional Constitutional Order (PCO) in 2007.
