Amjad Islam Amjad’s name adds to those significant writers who lock up the tradition of Urdu culture in the books of literature. He was the best screenwriter, poet, and columnist in Pakistan who took Urdu poetry and screenwriting to another height. Today, on 10th February 2023, he passed away in Lahore due to a cardiac arrest.

Biography

Amjad Islam Amjad was born on 4th August 1944 in Lahore, Punjab in British India. He got his secondary education in Lahore and then graduated from Govt Islamia College Civil Lines, Lahore. Amjad Islam Amjad did MA in Urdu Literature from Punjab University. He worked in different posts as a lecturer, director, writer, and columnist. He died on 10th February 2023 in Lahore on Friday due to a cardiac arrest.

Famous Works

Amjad Islam Amjad has written some masterpiece plays that have gone through multiple theatre adaptations. His famous works are Waris, Samandur, Dehleez, Din, Raat, Waqt, Fishaar and Inkaar. Along with writing several renowned plays, he has also contributed to Urdu literature with seventy books.

Some of his renowned books are  Shifting Sands, Ham Us Kay Hain, Sahilon Ki Hawa, Phir Yun Huwa, Zara Phir Se Kehna and Itne Khawb Kahan Rakhun Ga and many others.

As a historic literary personality, many acclaimed writers have done works on his personality. He has also achieved some of the prestigious national awards of Pakistan like Sitara-e-Imtiaz and The Pride of Performance.

Not only he was celebrated in Pakistan, but on international levels too. He has been awarded by Necip Fazil International Culture and Art Award by Turkey’s President Recep Tayyip Erdogan who said the following words about him, “Amjad Islam Amjad is one of the most important poets in modern Urdu literature.”

On his demise, many Pakistani famous personalities have shown sorrow and grief over such a big loss to literature. His death has created a gap in URdu literature that could hardly be filled by someone else. President of Pakistan Dr Arif Alvi, PM Shahbaz Sharif, Governor of Punjab, Shoaib Akhtar, Imran Abbas and many others have prayed for him via their tweets.
