Elections 2013LG polls in Punjab to be held on party basis: Sanaullah

LAHORE: The local government elections in Punjab will be held on party basis on December 7, Punjab Law Minister Rana Sanaullah Khan said in an interview on Friday.

The law minister said that the preparation for holding local government polls on party basis in the province has been completed.

Sanaullah said that the polls will be held on party basis through an upcoming ordinance amending the LB Act 2013 for which the Punjab cabinet was competent enough.

On Thursday, the Lahore High Court (LHC) ordered the Punjab government to hold local government elections across the province on party basis, ruling that holding local government elections in Punjab on non-party basis would be a violation of the constitution.

A two-member bench of the LHC comprising Chief Justice Umar Ata Bandial and Justice Farrukh Irfan Khan had announced the verdict in response to a petition filed by Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf, Pakistan People’s Party, Pakistan Muslim League-Quaid, and Majlis-i-Wahdat-i-Muslimeen challenging the non-party elections and the Punjab government’s jurisdiction to carry out delimitation of LG constituencies.
