SRINAGAR: Militants ambushed a police camp in Srinagar on Wednesday that left five Indian paramilitary personnel dead and five others injured, police said.
“Five Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) men were killed in the suicide attack on a group of about 25 men who were on duty,” a senior police officer told media on the condition of anonymity.
According to Indian media reports, militants lobbed grenades near the entrance of a police camp and then opened fire as they tried to storm inside.
Deputy Superintendent of Police Manoj Pandita said that two of the militants were killed in the gunfight that broke out after the assault on the base outside the city of Srinagar, which has been under curfew for weeks after violent protests.
It was not known how many militants were involved in the attack on the CRPF camp, which was launched at around 10:30 a.m. (0500 GMT) and was still continuing more than an hour later, Pandita said.
