The MQM members in the Lower House of the Parliament submitted their resignations to the Speaker Sardar Ayaz Sadiq in his chamber on Wednesday afternoon. The speaker subsequently forwarded their resignations to the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP).

Likewise, eight Senators of the MQM also submitted their resignations in the Senate, the Upper House of the Parliament.

Earlier, the 51 MQM members in the Sindh Assembly also submitted their resignations to the Speaker Sindh Assembly in Karachi.

The mass resignations by the MQM lawmakers were tendered as to express their reservations over the Rangers-led operation in Karachi.

Last night, in a party meeting presided over the Chief Altaf Hussain via telephone from London, the MQM lawmakers decided to resign after Altaf Hussain expressed disappointment over the party’s failure to effectively raise the issue of the Karachi operation in the Parliament.

The MQM, according to the sources, is of the view that their voice is not being heard on any government forum, therefore, the party is left with no other option but to resign from the national and provincial assemblies and Senate.
