NEW DELHI: The Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) Narendra Modi was sworn in as the India’s 15th Prime Minister on Monday at a grand, open air ceremony in the forecourt of the majestic Rashtrapati Bhawan.
The Indian President Pranab Mukherjee administered the oath of office to Narendra Modi.
Nearly 4,000 guests including top leaders from the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) countries like Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa attended the ceremony.
The Afghan President Hamid Karzai, Bhutan Prime Minister Tshering Tobgay, Nepal Prime Minister Sushil Koirala and Maldivian President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom were among the foreign dignitaries attending the ceremony besides Sharif and Rajapaksa.
This was the first time that the heads of states of the SAARC nations had been invited to attend the swearing-in ceremony of the Indian prime minister.
