North AmericaNawaz assures US to review Shakil Afridi case

WASHINGTON: Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has given assurance that the case of Shakil Afridi, the doctor who helped the CIA track down former Al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden, will be reviewed, a US news channel reported.

The assurance was given by the prime minister during his meeting with head of Foreign Affairs Committee of the US House of Representatives Ed Royce in Washington during his recent visit to the United States.

The channel reported that Ed Royce along with Robert Lorsch, who had launched a campaign to free Afridi, “heavily pressured” the Pakistani leadership about releasing the doctor and allowing him a life in the US.

It said that Lorsch and the lawmakers had brought so much pressure on Pakistani premier that he pledged a legal review of the Shakil Afridi case.

“This was first time that the leadership in Pakistan realised the importance of Dr Afridi not as a political bargaining tool but as a symbol of how freedom-loving American people regard Pakistan,” Lorsch said
