ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif will call on Indian President Pranab Mukherjee and hold bilateral talks with prime minister-elect Narendra Modi on the sidelines of the latter’s oath-taking ceremony on May 26, the Indian media citing Pakistani government sources reported on Saturday.

The adviser to the prime minister on national security and foreign affairs Sartaj Aziz, the special assistant to the prime minister on foreign affairs Tariq Fatemi and foreign secretary will accompany Nawaz Sharif during his visit to India.

Earlier, a spokesman for the Prime Minister House said that Nawaz Sharif has accepted India’s invitation to attend the oath-taking ceremony of the neighbouring country’s prime minister-elect Narendra Modi.

The Pakistani premier is among the leaders of member states of the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) invited by Modi.

It is the first time in Indian history that leaders from neighbouring countries have been invited to the swearing-in ceremony of a prime minister.

The swearing-in ceremony of Narendra Modi, to be held in the forecourt of the historic Rashtrapati Bhavan, is likely to be attended by as many as 3,000 guests, the Indian media further said.
