ISLAMABAD, Pakistan: The Federal government has decided to allow all foreign non-governmental organizations (NGOs) operating in Pakistan to continue to function for a period of six months within specified areas of operation allowed by the concerned authorities.
The decision was taken at a high level meeting held in Islamabad on Tuesday with Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif in the Chair.
It was decided in the meeting that measures will be taken to bring the international NGOs under the domain of relevant laws while all such organizations will complete a fresh process of registration with the government within three months.
The meeting directed the inter-ministerial committee headed by the Special Assistant to Prime Minister on Foreign Affairs Tariq Fatemi to provide the guidelines including rules, processes and draft legislation for streamlining the work of foreign NGOs in Pakistan in future.
The inter-ministerial committee will also suggest a monitoring and oversight mechanism to ensure compliance with legislation and rules in the future.
